A cluttered office prohibits you from achieving maximum productivity.  In extreme situations, it will keep some from even entering the room!

Follow my seven-step system to declutter your office and you will finally have the productive environment you always wanted!

How To Declutter Your Office

Step  #1: Start by making a list of all the items you feel are necessary to have in your office.  Then, as you are preparing for tip 2, make another list of the things that you currently have in your office.  Ultimately, you are going to keep only the things you need in your office.

Step #2: Now we are going to sort all the items in your office into three seperate files. A pile for the items that you need in your office.  A second pile for discard items *tip* these items can be refined into trash and donate. Finally, a keep, but not in the office, pile.

Step #3: Take your discard pile and remove all those items from your office.  Wow, look at that!  You now have twice as much room in here as before!  Take a second and reflect on how much better it feels in your office without all that unnecessary clutter.  The rest is going to be a breeze.

Step #4: Take all your keep, but not in the office, items to another room.  By now you should be able to see your office’s true potential.

Step #5: Take a second look at your bookshelves. See if you can reduce it by at least 50%.  Consider outdated books, books you said you would read, but haven’t, etc.

Step #6: Attack your filing cabinet.  Well, not literally, but is it set up it the most beneficial way?  Colored files are helpful to most people for sorting categories.  And don’t forget to use labels!  Consider archiving older information, that is, move it to storage.  Your filing cabinet should be for storing information you need ready access to.

Step #7: Now that you have decluttered your office, it is time to reward yourself with organizational aids!  Does your office have a closet?  Consider installing a closet organization system.  If that isn’t in your budget, pick up some shelves and ready made closet organizers.  A properly configured closet will go a long way in keeping your office clutter free.  Go to an office supply store and pick up plastic caddies for all your desk items.

A cluttered office is sure to hamper your creative energy and make it difficult to accomplish the tasks you set out to do.  By decluttering your office, not only have you cleared the space, but you have made it so you can work with a clear head!
